South Africa has one of the highest lightning strike densities in the world. We also have very long overhead power lines which are particularly vulnerable to electric storms.
Although the Western Cape is not as problematic, the higher lying ground is very vulnerable, especially in Gauteng. Although manufacturers of security systems design up to five layers of protection into their systems, it is unlikely that these layers will prevent a powerful or direct strike on the system.
A lightning strike does not have to be direct or in close proximity to cause damage. Lightning static in the area can cause severe damage to electronic equipment.
It is therefore imperative that we take additional steps to ensure that we are reasonably protected.
- In domestic homes, where possible, remove the transformer plug when there are signs of heavy lightning. This also applies to your TV, computer, DVD, music system and other sensitive electronic equipment.
- Ensure that plugs are replaced and switched on immediately after the storm.
- Ensure that your security system is correctly earthed.
- Install surge protection devices.
